In support of the Department for Education (DofE) it says that every state-funded school must offer a curriculum that is balanced and broadly based, and which:

• Promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, and physical development of pupils at the school and of society
• Prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of later life

At Kingsholm Church of England Primary School and Nursery, we recognise that the personal development of the children – spiritually, morally, socially and culturally – plays a significant role in their ability to learn and to grow into well-rounded members of society. Spiritual Development

We promote our children’s spiritual development through: 

• Our Religious Education which includes visits to different places of worship. 
• Worship and assemblies which celebrate beliefs and cultures from around the world 
• Our daily reflections and prayers linked to our whole school values 
• Taking our children out on school trips or inviting people into the school inspires awe and wonder. 
• Our Wellbeing curriculum (Personal, Social and Health Education and Relationships, Sex and Health Education)  allow our children to reflect on their own feelings and develop an understanding of the feelings of others.
• Developing creativity and imagination through play, English, art, design technology music, dance and drama.

 

This enables our children to:

• Respect themselves and others
• Have an ability to show courage in defence of their values and beliefs
• Have an appreciation for the awe and wonder in our world

 

Moral Development 

We promote our children’s moral development through: 

• Providing a clear moral code for behaviour that is promoted consistently through all aspects of the school – worship, our 3 B’s and our traffic light behaviour system
• Our core value Respect, Online safety lessons, Wellbeing curriculum, Class Charters, House points, Celebration certificates and Kingsholm star 
• Promoting equality in relation to religion, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or gender.
• Giving pupils opportunities to explore and develop moral concepts and values through the curriculum such as PSHE, Fair Trade
• Encouraging children to take responsibility for their actions, through PSHE/RSHE and our behaviour policy.
• Courageous advocacy and learning about charities and either raising money or awareness 
• All adults modelling fairness, integrity and respect for all our children.
• Recognising and respecting different cultures represented by our children and staff in the school displays around the school and texts used to support our curriculum.

• Think through consequences of both their own and others’ actions
• Confidence in acting in accordance with their own moral compass

 

Social Development 

We promote our children’s social development through: 

• Encouraging our children to work co-operatively in all aspects of school life
• Fostering a sense of community with common, inclusive values through worship, the PSHE/RSHE curriculum, school summer fetes, Christmas bingo and our open morning
• Encouraging children to recognise and respect social differences and similarities.
• Providing children with opportunities to exercise leadership and responsibility through Pupil Parliament and School Council. 
• Our Wellbeing curriculum helps our children to develop qualities that are valued by society, such as, resilience, thoughtfulness, honesty, respect for others, moral principles, independence, co-operation and self-respect.

• Show respect for people, living things and the environment

Cultural Development

We promote our children’s cultural development through: 

• Celebrating the attitudes, values and traditions of diverse cultures through the curriculum, worship, school social events, and visitors to the school
• Participating in GSP events such as the Shakespeare and Science festivals, sports matches and competitions.
• Recognising and nurturing our children’s gifts and talents through after school clubs, Kingsholm University and the curriculum.
• Making links with schools abroad through our Global Learning Curriculum, connecting classrooms and Erasmus projects.
• Recognising and celebrating national events such as the Olympics and Remembrance Day.
• WOW days are linked to subjects being studied throughout the school e.g. Greek Day.

• Understand the influences which have shaped their own cultural heritage
